Linux Vs Windows Web Hosting?

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Linux web hosting (often referred to as LAMP – Linux, Apache, MySQL & PHP) solutions are suitable for webmasters who use Linux hosting features, such as Perl programming, PHP programming and MySQL database.

Windows Web Hosting gives a company the capability of designing web sites using the ever-popular Windows Operating System. This allows development using technologies such as Active Server Pages (ASP), COM, and the newer .NET infrastructure.

Advantages of using Linux based web server compared to Windows based web server:-

1.Stable:-
Linux operating system is very stable and robust.  A web site hosted on a Linux operating system will have very high up-time.

2. Low cost of ownership:-
Linux OS comes free of cost.  Also, it has fully fledged server, and desk top applications that come free with the OS. These server applications (such as FTP, Web Server, DNS Server, File Server etc.) are also very stable.

3. Easy to move between hosts:
A web site designed to host on a Linux based web server can be hosted on a Windows web server easily, where as the reverse is not always true.

4. Most widely used : Linux/Unix based web hosting is most widely used compared to Windows based web hosting.

5. Scalability: A web site designed for compatibility with a Linux/Unix based web server meets the scalability requirement easily without making any site wide design changes.

Disadvantage:-
Linux based web server is not fully compatible with Microsoft technologies. If you are using any specialized applications or VB for development of your web site, it is preferable to host with a Windows based web server.

Both these web server are used by users for different purposes and the selection of the web hosting depends upon the nature of the website or business. Linux server administration and Linux server management has been more effective for complex websites, where as Windows servers are used for sites which needs different configuration.

Windows Vs. Linux

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Please Note:

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you have to select the same operating system for your hosting account that you use on your own computer. That is simply not true.

The operating system that you use on your computer does not need to govern your choice of hosting platform. All Jaguarpc.com PHP hosting packages come with FTP access and a wide range of web page publishing options. If, for example, your computer runs on Microsoft Windows, you are not obligated to choose Windows web hosting.

Both technologies are suitable for beginners, professional web developers, and everyone in between, but it is essential to choose the technology that is more suited to your style of web building. Each technology has its own distinct advantages for users.

Windows Hosting Microsoft should be your choice of platform if you plan on utilizing Active Server Pages or other Microsoft applications to design your web pages. This platform delivers reduced development time and better functionality for databases.

One of the main advantages for choosing the Microsoft platform is the ability to use ASP, ASP .NET, and Access databases to use in building your web site. ASP and ASP .NET provide a rapid, scalable, and efficient development environment to build your web site. These tools, along with MS Access will allow you to make your web site dynamic and interactive.

This platform is also a suitable alternative if you are developing static HTML based web sites, or sites that incorporate Macromedia Flash or other client-side scripting technologies.

We recommend you choose Windows 2003 as your hosting platform if you are using specific applications that require Microsoft Windows to run such as Access, ASP, ASP .NET, or Microsoft SQL Server.

Note: Microsoft FrontPage can be used on both the Linux and Windows platforms.

Linux Hosting Linux is widely considered to be the best operating system for web hosting servers. Characteristically reliable, stable and efficient, Linux has been proven in the most demanding web and mail server environments.

If you plan to incorporate work that uses PHP, Perl or MySQL, Linux is the solution you should choose. Linux is also ideal for the kind of websites that display information as a brochure, in newsletter format or as data sheets. Linux works well for ‘brochure-ware’ sites that offer interaction via inquiry forms, online purchasing and other e-commerce functions.

Essential programs such as Microsoft FrontPage can also be successfully used with Linux technology. In fact, FrontPage Extensions are offered with Jaguarpc.com Linux hosting packages. Linux is an excellent operating system that is well suited to meet your web hosting needs. Additionally, there are a huge amount of free applications available on the Internet for Linux and it uses less hardware resources than Windows 2003.

Tips For Converting Windows User To Linux

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

A survey reveals that many businesses, governmental agencies, educational institutions and other big organizations are switching over to Linux. What could be the cause of converting Windows user to Linux? These organizations are also switching over to free software for their application programs from the traditional commercial software. Here are some of the plausible reasons for this conversion at such a fast pace.

The foremost reason could be that Linux is available under a free software license and that it is available free of cost. One can easily download it from the Internet and that too for free. Moreover, one can also buy at minimal cost in the form of a disk or box. Another good thing about this operating system is that you can use one copy on as many computers, without any limitation. On other hand Microsoft Windows comes at a good sum of money.

Secondly, Linux is built from open source and free software, which gives its user the freedom to modify it. Even the source can be modified in any way. This again is in contrast with Microsoft Windows that does not permit for the modification of the software. Many organizations prefer Linux because of the freedom given to modify the source code without revealing it to any outsider.

Thirdly, you can easily find high quality support for this operating system on the Internet – for free! Many newsgroups and other forums provide this help. And for commercial needs, you can purchase Linux support at reasonable rates. With this operating system you do not need patches to cope with security threats or to fix bugs. These two things are very uncommon and infrequent for Linux.

Linux is based on the UNIX architecture that makes it almost free of any major obsolescence. The UNIX has been tried, tested and refined for above 35 years now. It is proven now that it extremely efficient, secure and robust. Although new versions are being brought into the market but the base remains the same and so does the security factor.

Besides this, the Linux users do not have to undergo any forced upgrades. The reason behind this fact is that older versions are not discontinued to be supported. And the newer versions are, again, available for free and are compatible with the older ones. If you use to upgrade a new version then you are not required to pay any licensing fee or any software cost. With Linux you can be sure that the even the others cost associated with upgrading to a new version are relatively low.

Lastly, Linux is known for its superior quality. It is very much immune to infection by viruses, resistant to system crashes and hardly needs rebooting. This is so because right from the beginning it was created with security in mind!

Summary: Linux is one of the less known operating systems but some of its features are better than the Microsoft Windows. It is based on free software and open source. This makes it easier for the user to modify it and that is why it is available for free of cost too. Even the new versions are compatible with the older ones and are available at no extra cost.

Windows Dedicated Server VS Linux Dedicated Server

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

So your business has grown large enough that you are now looking into a dedicated server, but you have you are not sure which is right for you, a Linux or Windows server. Does it matter? If so, how are they different and which operating system is right for you? This is often a very confusing decision for many businesses because they are unclear if one is more beneficial than the other is.

Obviously, you want the more dependable dedicated server, that goes without saying, but beyond that, you may need to know how the Linux and Windows differ and which one is best for your business. First off, you should know that Windows is owned by Microsoft, while Linux is open source and therefore is free to use, as you will. What this means to you is that setting up your Windows dedicated server will cost more than the Linux. Of course, unless you are setting up the server yourself, the cost of the operating system for the Windows server, will not necessary affect you.

Most people assume if they are running PC’s that are Windows-based that their server must also be Windows based, but this is not true. You see, when you access your web account for your hosting, it most commonly via FTP, which both Windows and Linux can handle.

How you intend to use your server and what programs will often determine your choice of Windows vs. Linux. For example, both platforms can handle mySQL, POP3′s, and PHP’s. However, if you intend to use.NET, FrontPage, Access, and Windows Streaming Video, then you will probably need to go with a Windows dedicated server.
The real argument comes from the stability of Windows vs. Linux dedicated servers. It may surprise you to know that Linux is actually the most popular type of server even though Windows is the most popular operating system for home users of the PC. It has been speculated that Linux is more secure than Windows, but at the end of the day, the security of both Windows and Linux servers comes down to the ability of the system administrators.
Performance between Windows and Linux servers is about the same, but Linux overall does outperform Windows simply because Windows tends to offer the one-size-fits-all packages and Linux dedicated servers offers extendible implementation. Overall, the end user will not see a performance difference between the two platforms.
In the end, you have to decide which is best for your business. In terms of security, again, both platforms are vulnerable if the system administrators are not skilled in security functions. Therefore, your attention truly needs to be on who is implementing your server rather than which platform is best. If you have Windows and Linux with the same security features side by side, you will not tell much of a difference, but if the Windows has less security, obviously, the Linux will outshine the Windows.

Modern computers enable you to install two or more operating systems on a single machine and use those operating systems independently. This configuration is known as dual-boot or multi-boot. The most popular combination of dual-boot system is Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. In order to continue Linux installation on a Windows machine, you are required to create a /boot partition using the free disk space available on your hard drive. You are highly recommended to halt Linux installation process while creating space for the /boot partition. However, it may render your Windows hard drive partition inaccessible and cause serious partition loss. In such circumstances, you need to go for Partition Recovery Software to retrieve inaccessible and lost hard drive partitions.

In order to illustrate this problem, consider the underwritten scenario:

You use a Microsoft Windows installed machine that has two partitions- one boot partition and one data partition.

You run the Setup of Linux operating system to install it on free hard drive space.

You abort Linux installation process when it creates /boot partition for the Linux operating system.

You boot your computer with Microsoft Windows operating system and find out that your data partitions is not accessible.

Or

You are able to access the data partition, but if you use a tool that accesses information of partitions, it displays wrong information about the Windows partitions.

Root of the problem

The problem generally occurs due to corruption of MBR (Master Boot Record) partition table, when you abort installation process of Linux operating system. Hard drive errors might have been introduced by an interrupted installation of Linux operating system.

Resolution

In order to Recover Partition in such situations, you can try out the below steps:

Remove and recreate the damaged Windows partitions, if you have an updated and valid backup in place.

If the backup is not updated or is unavailable, you can opt for third party applications to recover lost or damaged hard drive partitions.

The Partition Recovery Software are suitable for virtually every partition loss situation in Microsoft Windows. They deploy advanced scanning techniques to efficiently handle partition loss and ensure absolute Windows Data Recovery. With simple and rich graphical user interface and non-destructive nature, these applications are totally easy and safe to use.

Stellar Data Recovery Software recovers lost, corrupted, damaged, inaccessible, or deleted Windows partitions. The software is designed for Microsoft Windows 7, Vista, 2003, XP, and 2000 operating systems. It salvages NTFS5, NTFS, FAT32, VFAT, FAT16, and FAT12 file system partitions.

Linux is an open-source operating system, which means the code that makes it run is publicly available. This means computer experts all over the world can share ways of improving how the system works. Although it is more complicated to understand than Windows, most computer experts say Linux is much more reliable and less likely to ‘crash’. This makes it particularly useful for running websites.

Web Hosting is today’s one of the prime requirements. Emerged from simple HTML pages hosting to a full blown web based hosted applications, creating several useful facilities for the people.

Linux Systems will not Replace Windows as the Typical Operating-System

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I am fairly new to be able to Linux, specifically Ie8, and so far I am loving the “freedom”. I chose that since I work with, and with Windows every day, it would be a great idea to experiment with something new and broaden my technical skills. Unfortunately, I was rapidly reminded of why I didnrrrt continue using a Linux-based operating-system a couple of years ago initially when i first gave it a try. Although I’ll continue using Ubuntu for learning uses, here are 5 reasons why A linux systemunix will continue to are unsuccessful for the general, each day user.

1. Open Source * The very reason why I like Linux is the same reason it never generally seems to get ahead. Keeping in mind that I have used Windows for more than 15 years, I am simply used to certain programs looking and performing a certain way, i believe that most people are very opposed to change. Although there are many Linux options to almost any Windows (or perhaps Mac) application, the particular problem is that they are not duplicates. A perfect instance in my situation has been my relying on Microsoft Money for a lot of years that every period I would attempt to use a different application I became very disappointed. Sooner or later, I found that KMyMoney is definitely an suitable alternative using every feature that I was seeking. Though it took me over a few days to get used to the newest software, it works nicely.

2. Technical Support – If you have one thing about A linux systemunix that there is plenty of, in addition to the many distributions, it is tech support team. The majority of it is at no charge. Unfortunately, it is sometimes impossible to find a simple answer to a specific concern, or you have to invest 5 hours finding out that the solution was a straightforward command that would have to be typed into the fatal. Although the major distributions, including Red Hat, present paid support, which I am sure is excellent and can speed up the process of receiving an issue resolved, I do not believe in paid Free. Technically, the definition of Free is not necessarily free because it allows one to customize and sell an item, however, the no cost part is what allures most switchers to Red hat and it can be extremely disappointing when there is zero organized help easily available.

3. Software Installation * For the most part, in Glass windows (or Mac) anyone (1) purchase software from your preferred retailer or download it from your website, (2) run the installer, (3) it locations a shortcut in your desktop and Start menus, (4) you double click on the shortcut, and (5) your current program is running. At least in a best world that’s how it operates. I am a technician and so i know it is not often that straight forward, even so, things get VERY complicated in Linux. Will my distribution use.rpm or.n packages? Am My partner and i using Gnome, KDE, another with the available GUI (Graphical Interface) or no GUI? Do I need to install via the fatal? Does the software need any dependencies? Will the installation method utilized be able to install your dependencies? Need I say far more? These are just a few of the questions that I forced me personally to learn the answers to for being a satisfied Red hat user.

4. Internet Browsing – I do not believe this one is as essential, but worth mentioning. I am not one who loves testing new surfers, so the ones i have spent a substantial amount of time with are limited to Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Firefox. My favorite was always Internet Explorer, until I started using Ubuntu. Being that web browsers have never been that important to me We started using Safari and I am currently a very big enthusiast due to its many exts. However, my place is that if most people are much like me, they do not have the range of using Internet Explorer or even Safari, and have to be in for whichever browser is available based on the A linux systemunix distribution and GUI that they have selected.

5. Your Family — As I previously mentioned I am computer technician. However, I love testing new technologies; in this case Ubuntu. This is the perfect real world check as to why Linux could have a difficult time completing its goal. Even today, both my wife along with young son (plus my sister) haven’t stopped complaining articulating their opinion concerning my Ubuntu installing(s). There is such a great learning curve for the average consumer that I had to put in a VirtualBox with Windows to keep them from poor mouthing me. Luckily, we’ve got multiple laptops in our household, including one or two with Windows, therefore at the end of the day most people are happy. The Linux system way of doing points is so different it truly requires dedication in order for non-technical users to stick around. In summary, We honestly understand and also appreciate what the Linux community is attempting to accomplish. Unfortunately, I believe in which things got a little out of hand and now you will find too many options. The Open Source(ness) has authorized too many hands in the cookie jar which aren’t allowing overall advancement, because once a person decides that they are interested in this “Linux thing” they right away become confused as well as turned away due to the numerous complications.Should right now there be some type of constraint or test concerning who can work on open source software?
