Top 3 Operating Systems for E-Readers

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

During 2009, e-readers were operating at maximum efficiency with over 2.2 million devices being shipped to stores. In 2010, the demand for e-readers is expected to increase by more than 50%. Their operating systems create the necessary base for these popular devices. Many first-class eBook Readers run full operating systems and can function like a computer.

Google Android

It is not surprising that Google Android tops the list of operating systems for e-readers. The Barnes and Noble ‘Nook’ was the first e-reader to use Google Android. Since that launch, Google Android has been used in various e-readers and that trend is expected to continue into the future.

Google Android gives users access to 1,000,000 free, public-domain books digitized by Google. All devices using the Android system can tap into Android apps and vice versa. In addition, Google understands that the real power of the open source Android lies with the Operating System Defaults. Google eBooks will serve as the default on every Android device.

The innovative eDGe e-reader, created by Entourage Systems, runs Google Android operating system. The eDGge is a netbook/e-reader combination which offers users the convenience of a Google toolbar on the right screen. Running on Wi-Fi and 3G networks, users can surf the internet, watch videos, or engage in video chat with this device.

Spring Design’s ‘Alex’ will also support Android apps. Yet any applications which require internet access will work only with Wi-Fi. With this dual-display e-reader, the 6.5″ e-ink screen for reading sits above a 3.5” color LCD. Users can display images and video, view notes, and even browse the web.

Expected to be released in 2010, the proposed Netronix, a collaboration between Texas Instruments and a Taiwanese networking specialist, is also an Android-based e-reader. Android e-readers allow portability of books (between Android e-readers) as well as access to Android apps.

Linux

The new Skiff reader is a Linux-based system. The Skiff reader is said to be the largest (11.5″) and thinnest (0.25″) with the highest-resolution (UXGA – 1200 x 1600). The Skiff reader is expected to be on sale later in the year. Interested buyers will be able to find it online and at over 1000 Sprint stores in the US.

Sony Reader runs the MontaVista Linux Professional Edition operating system. Sony ebook Library is not supported on Linux. Yet when this device is connected, it grants access to its flash memory and memory card slots (as if they were USB Mass Storage Devices).

Amazon’s Kindle DX runs Linux-2.6.22.19. Operating system updates are received wirelessly and install automatically during a period in sleep mode in which the wireless is in operation. As it was noted in the article “Amazon Offer Kindle for Sale in Europe – Will they Succeed“, the device is being offered globally on the 3G network with no charges for the wireless connectivity that is used to download eBooks (Digital Book Readers). With its Wacom touchscreen, Illiad runs Linux 2.4 kernel.

Due to its open Linux operating system, Illiad can run third-party applications created for it. The Hanlin eReader v3, one of the first Open Source e-readers, is built on the Linux operating system. China’s Hanvon uses Linux 2.6 and Cool-er, Pocketbook, and Bookeen also run Linux.

Windows

Although Windows is slipping in popularity, it will remain a major player in operating system market for many years into the future. Sony PRS-505/SC Digital eBook Reader, with its company software Sony ebook Library, is similar to iTunes and requires Windows. The software will not work on the 64-bit version of Windows XP but does support Windows Vista and Windows 7. Recent announcements point to the use of Windows 7 in new color ‘slate’ e-readers such as Archos or HP. The Taiwanese company, MSI, has also created an e-reader/computer combo which runs Windows 7.

E-readers with operational systems, such as the leading Google Android, encourage openness. These innovative devices are ‘cracked’ to allow users to run Android apps as well as download music and access social networks. Yet Fortify Software, the application vulnerability specialist, has issued a warning to corporations about possible security issues with modified e-readers. When a devise is ‘cracked’ or repurposed in this manner, there isn’t any way to check the security of the operating system ‘cracks’ or newly installed programs.

For usage outside the corporate world, however, e-readers have few drawbacks. E-reader companies are always trying to improve on features, performance, and design. E-readers have made a tremendous impact on the reading experience – what we read, where we read, and how we read books and newspapers. More and more people are choosing e-readers and their state-of-the art operating systems are helping to drive that demand.

Using Pidgin: Sweet Instant Messaging Without Ads or Horrible, Buggy Clients for Xp/vista/linux

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Let’s be honest: managing multiple instant messaging accounts on different services can be a pain in the neck, especially when you need a different program for each account. That’s not fun, even if your dream is to have your system tray touch your Start menu (or your System menu, GNOME folks!). Ignoring that fact, IM programs tend to be buggy, slow, and bogged down with advertising. Plus, most multi-protocol clients tend to cost money. I don’t have money. But I do have a solution. Read on, kind person who reads thy articles.

Everyone, meet Pidgin. Pidgin is an open-source instant messaging client that allows users to connect to a wide variety of Instant Messaging clients. Don’t believe me? I don’t blame you, so here’s the supported list:

AIM
Bonjour
Gadu-Gadu
Google Talk
Groupwise
ICQ
IRC
MSN
QQ
SILC
SIMPLE
Sametime
XMPP
Yahoo!
Zephyr

That’s pretty cool, no? The best part is the interface, which is built with GTK2. It’s really, really lightweight, so it won’t be a nasty little resource hog. The Away and Available messages are a breeze to set, and you can use one message for all the networks you are currently logged into. And you can be logged into all of your accounts at the same time.

Also, Pidgin supports all the other stuff you’ve come to expect. It will rest in your system tray. It has buddy icons. It has sounds. It will notify you when buddies come online. It will check your e-mail. It won’t do your laundry.

Oh, and it doesn’t have ads in it. Nice!

Pidgin is an open-source program, meaning that it’s created, written, and maintained by a group of volunteers who do it with a not-for-profit mindset. The code is freely available, and the program is free to use and to edit. The application recently changed its name from Gaim, and has been around for quite awhile now.

How can you get Pidgin? Easy! It works on both Linux and on Windows, and Linux users can get installation directions from this website. All those using other operating systems can get more information from the Pidgin project website.

Interested in switching to Linux? You can find the list of applications that work with Linux here in order to help you with the switch.

BeginLinux.com

The original gPC was released in early November 2007, and it brought us the innovative gOS Operating system. gOS is based on Ubuntu + Enlightenment and offers Google integration with many of the desktop applications. Direct access to Youtube, Google Docs, Meebo, Blogger, and more comes from a collection of icons residing on the Ibar at the bottom of the gOS desktop. Another feature that is unique to gOS is the shelf storage a functional organization system.

When the $199 gPCs hit the Walmart shelves, they didn’t stay there long. High demand same can be said for online environment where ordering methods still seem to be exhausted from the surprising demand for this inexpensive but functional desktop unit. The Everex TC2502 Green gPC comes with 1.5 GHz Via Technologies C7-D processor, pre-installed office software from OpenOffice.org, DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, 512 MB of DDR2 system memory, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, and a 80 GB hard drive.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Everex announces the CloudBook Ultra-Mobile PC. The Cloud is 9 inches long, weighs in at 2 pounds, boasts a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M ULV mobile processor and it provides your with five hours of use with a single battery charge due to the the 4-cell, lithium-ion battery. Also the Cloud sports a 7 inch wide screen LCD and the pre-installed and linked software includes Mozilla FireFox, gMail, Meebo, Skype, Google Documents & Spreadsheets, Google Calendar, Google News, Google Maps, Wikipedia, Google Product Search, GIMP, Blogger, YouTube, Xine Movie Player, RhythmBox, Faqly, Facebook and OpenOffice.org 2.3 which includes Writer, Calc, Draw, and Impress for all of your office needs.

Due to the lack of a gOS compatible webcam, gOS and meebooth partnered with Ezonics, a leader in web cam developement, and created the gCam. It looks as if more accessories are to come for the Cloud too. Ezonics CEO Liu Ping commented “We are excited to work with gOS to launch the gCam as a first of many Linux friendly, cloud devices.”

One major enhancement of the Everex Cloud over it’s predecessor is the new Rocket 2.0 gOS operating system. The existing gOS 1.0 desktop has been enhanced adding features like gbooth, a web browser-based application that makes capturing photos and movies a snap. Other improvements include pre-installed Flash plugin for online movie viewing, improved reliability for Exalt Wi-Fi manager, virtual desktops for easy grouping of applications across multiple desktop spaces, and easy online storage, backup, and file sharing at box.net.

Other small, inexpensive, Linux powered PCs are popping up everywhere after the Asus Eee PC sold 40,000 copies right out of the gate and the original gPC still show sold out almost everywhere. At ZaReason.com they sold out of their pre-order alotment of the Cloudbook right away. Besides the positive response from consumers the future of Everex and others looks even brighter when taking into consideration their future plans. Everex plans on releasing a developer version 60 days after the initial cloud release which will include a touch screen, also 9 inch versions are on the way soon and possibly a wide selection of light skins.

Speed Up Your Computer Performance Tips

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Are your computers getting slower and slower each time you use it? Do you still acquire the same computer performance even if it is more than 5 to 10 years old already? Well, if your problem is a slow computer performance I have some tips you might need to speed up the process. These tips will help improve your computer’s performance.

First, if your computer is too old I suggest that you burn your files that are less important. Place it on CD or DVD to give more hard disk and memory space. This will help lessen the files that your computer will need to read on. Like on the start up or when running some applications that will need to read the whole files in your computer. It slows the process due to the fact that your PC specs don’t have the capabilities of the new computers being sold in the market right now.

You can also upgrade your computer components to get better performance. However, if you don’t have money, it is not advisable that you buy CD, DVD or any computer components. Don’t worry because there are still other ways to accelerate the performance of your computer.

Some files are still in your computer even if you already uninstall the programs you installed before. Most of us didn’t know that, right? These files are left over by programs we used before. Now, these files are traceable using some free program out there. It’s not easy to trace them or sometimes we are not sure what files to delete so we end up having no choice but not to delete it. We don’t want to remove something we didn’t know because sometimes we are afraid that we might encounter troubles if we will be deleting these files. It might cause us some problems like the computer will not work properly because the files we deleted actually has a major part in our OS but we assume that it has no use. It happened to me before. So I suggest that you must try a Google search first before deleting the files.

Another way is by using programs like CCleaner. It is a tool you can use to remove unused files in your system. This tool allows your windows to run fast and free some space in your hard drive. It has the ability to clean your internet activities as well.

Next is to lessen the startup program. Remove unnecessary programs on startup so it won’t affect the speed of your computer while opening.  Those startup programs make your computer slow while opening because your computer memory has to load those startup programs first. Your memory needs more time to do this that’s why it makes your computer slow. If your memory is not that high, I suggest doing this process to make the loading faster. Well, here is the way how you can lessen your startup programs. Click “start” then go to “run” or on the “search box” of your laptop, type “msconfig”. After that, you will see a pop-up window with lots of choices. Choose the “Startup” tab then uncheck the programs you don’t need to load when your computer starts.

Last thing I know is disk defragmenter. Disk Defragmenter is another computer program designed to increase access speed. Also known as defragmenting, this is the process of rearranging files stored on a disk to occupy contiguous storage locations. The objective of this process is to optimize the time it takes to read and write files to/from the disk. It can be done by minimizing head travel time while maximizing the transfer rate. Disk Defragmenter can also improve the loading time in system startup for computers supported by Windows XP.
